The Mazda 323 is the name used for the export models of their Familia range. The Familia or 323 models is the name used by Mazda for the family cars or compact cars manufactured between 1964 and 2003. This is a successful model where 10,589,052 cars were sold worldwide. The Familia line was replaced by the Mazda Axela in 2004. 1000, 1200, and 1300, 800, 808, and 818 were the other names under which the Familia was marketed. The recent model of the Familias is known as Mazda 323 in many places. Familias were built in Hiroshima, Japan, although they were also assembled in Taiwan, Malaysia, South Africa, Colombia and New Zealand
The Great Little Car or GLC was introduced in 1977 and was noticed for the rear wheel drive sub-compact options, replacing the 818/Mizer. This model offered the options of hatchbacks and station wagon bodies, both available with a 3 or 5 door body style. The Mazda 323 used three types of engines, 985 cc PC, 1272 cc TC, or 1416 cc UC. This model also used many parts with the older Mazda RX-3. The 1600 cc model that was available in South Africa did not have a Mazda engine, unlike the rest of the range. In order to satisfy that country's local content regulations, a Mitsubishi Saturn 1.6 litre unit was used.
