The Volvo 940 is one of the last long-running lines of large rear-wheel drive cars introduced in 1991. The Volvo 940 was considered by many as a modified Volvo 740. The drive-trains and most of the options available in the 940 were similar to the 740. The 740 and the Volvo 940 used the same dashboard, drivetrain choices, and sheet metal from the A-pillar forward. The 960 was a modified model of the 760. They had similar front sheet metal, independent rear suspension, dashboard, and other interior features. The production of the Volvo 940 series ended in 1998.
The Volvo 940 was available in three versions: The 940GLE used a DOHC 16-valve version of the 2.3-litre engine with a 6000 rpm redlines. The 940 Turbo used a turbocharged 2.3-litre engine, and the top-end 940SE (turbo) included body-coloured trim. In 1992, the 940 GLE used a 114 bhp 2.3-litre 4-cylinder engine and was sold as the 940 GL. The 940 SE was similar to the 960 Turbo
